Description
Texas Highway 166 leading to Sawtooth Mountain with various summer foliage colors and blue skies with light wispy clouds. Recent monsoon rains have started to green things up. Debris is seen in the low water crossing of Hwy 166. On nearby Highway 118, the torrential rain pour overnight washed away the pavement in many places. Located in the Davis Mountains of far west Texas in Jeff Davis County, near Fort Davis, Alpine, and Marfa.

"As one travels west on I-10 or I-20, out of the vast desert, on the horizon, slowly rises the purple mass of the Davis Mountains, the largest mountain chain entirely within Texas. Elevations range from 3,500 to 8,000 feet as they rise above the Chihuahuan desert. The mild climate and volcanic soils support a most biologically diverse selection of mountain flora and fauna.
The mountains receive more rain than the surrounding Trans-Pecos area and therefore have vegetation not found in the desert lowlands, such as pi¤on pine, black cherry, alligator juniper, live and dwarf gray oak, yellow and limber pine and the unusual and rare Madrone tree. The fall colors truly rival the best of northern and eastern states."

".Sawtooth Mountain is in the Davis Mountains twenty-two miles northwest of Fort Davis in central Jeff Davis County (at 30°41' N, 104°14' W). It rises to an elevation of 7,686 feet above sea level, some 1,700 feet above the Rockpile, a mile northeast of the summit. On the mountain a surface of shallow, stony soils supports scrub brush and grasses. In 1941 engineers of the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation discovered the name of Christopher (Kit) Carson carved on a huge boulder, with the date December 25, 1839, at the Rockpile."
